Rafting on the Deschutes

This was Matthew's first time rafting. What better way to start than going through a class IV rapid without a guide. :) This picture was taken on the Oak Springs rapid about a half second before the rear person wearing a baseball cap(Ryan) was thrown into the water. Matthew is the only person in the boat not wearing a hat. What an expression on his face. I am sitting to the left with a cowboy hat.

We went through the rapid and then our raft became "stuck" in the "current". After paddling our hearts out, we continued to go in a circle until this nice boat came along and lodge themselves under our raft. They pushed us off and freed us from the rapid, as they themselves starting going in a circle. It will be a trip not soon forgotten.

  1. That's great! Maybe we'll go with you two in a few years...and if you're up for it, we could do the 3 day trip! Ahhhh. Packing all your clothes, food, tents etc in a "dry bag" and praying when you unpack at night it is still, in fact, dry. Not to mention really, really, hoping none of it falls out when you go through the big rapids. Technically it's all tied down, but how these things can go awry. In any case, it's still a blast, we'd just have to wait a few years before the kids were old enough. Fun stuff!
